Take the constellations out of the sky, and onto your ears.

Jewellery stacking has been a trend for a while, using chunky earrings in multiple piercings.

The ‘constellation’ trend is similar, but that bit more delicate and star-like.

It’s really easy to do and makes for a pretty, eye-catching jewellery statement.

Charlotte Collins, piercing expect at jewellery brand Astrid & Miyu, tells Metro.co.uk: ‘”Constellation” is the nickname often given to multiple ear piercings placed sporadically on the ear (typically but not limited to the lobe).

‘It creates a delicate but curated constellation-esque look, hence the name.’

She’s spotted more people wanting to wear jewellery in this way, going for a more is more approach.

‘I think an increase in the popularity of curated maximalism in conjunction with people really embracing freedom of self expression has led to a rise in multiple ear piercings,’ she explains.

‘Also body jewellery isn’t all dull and bulky like the majority once was, there’s now such a a mix of studs, hoops and intricate designs to suit everyone’s personal style.’

There are lots of ways you can approach the look – the choice really is yours.

You might stick to studs for something minimal, but for those interested in creating interesting shapes – like a constellation – it can be good to vary what you’re wearing, such as a mix of hoops, studs, diamanté, pearl and other pieces.

Charlotte says: ‘I think the great thing about having multiple ear piercings is how many different looks you can achieve depending on the jewellery you choose.

‘For a more delicate and ornate look – smaller pieces are ideal.

‘But for those wanting something a little more elaborate, a combination of hoops and statement pieces along with tiny accents can be really effective.’

For the constellation look, the piercer will typically have a consultation with a client first to discuss the desired end result and which part of the ear they want to focus on.

‘The piercer will then work with the ear’s unique anatomy and strategically mark up different placements for the client to look at before going ahead with the piercing/piercings,’ Charlotte says.

‘Depending on which part of the ear you’re getting pierced your piercer may recommend against doing too many at once, or piercing the cartilage on both sides.

‘This is too ensure you can efficiently heal your piercings without complications – and so that you always have a side to sleep on while your piercings are healing.’
